tHE BayS PRECINCT URBAN TRANSFORMATION
A champagne project and the jewel in the crown of the UGNSW portfolio, Bays Precinct is arguably the most valuable stretch of urban blight in the world. At 90 hectare of land and 5.5km of harbour front, Bays precinct was to be the catalyst in attracting knowledge workers (talent) and the subsequent investment into Sydney to give the city its competitive edge.
However, in order to attract talent, the value proposition needed to be compelling. The infrastructure and urban systems needed to be world class and the ecological footprint benign if not positive. To lure the creative class, this precinct needed to be creative beyond measure. Google were slated to occupy the White Bay Power Station and to tap the minds of the nation, a Call for Great Ideas competition was publicly launched.
To achieve these ambitious goals, Matt set about undertaking an environmental survey to understand the site and the waterways and thereby understand the constraints and opportunities. Engineering systems were then developed. Meanwhile the call for Great Ideas had closed, Matt had the privilege of joining Sir Bob Parker (former Mayor of Christchurch), Saul Eslake (celebrated economist) and Sarah Hill form the NSW Dept Planning (who would later become he CEO of the Greater Sydney Commission). Matt’s role was to determine the extent to which the submissions aligned with the bold ambition of the organisation. After two long days, the competition closed and a truly great idea was announced.
